Join UK-born paleontologist prof. Michael Sandy who now lives and works in Plovdiv after a career teaching in the USA for this illustrated and interactive presentation which will focus on some of the famous and not so famous large creatures of the past. You won’t hear about dragons or other mythical creatures – but you will hear about real monsters that once lived in the past – we have the fossils to prove it! These giant animals that lived on land – mammoths and dinosaurs – and also giants from the world of invertebrates, including insects, up to nearly 1 metre in length. Specimens of real fossils and copies made from real fossils will be available for examination. Fossils are a clue in helping to unlock information about the past conditions on earth millions of years ago – it’s ancient geography and past climatic conditions.

Description

Michael Sandy says he has had an interest in fossils since he was a schoolboy. Here is how he tells his own story: “I enjoyed school trips to explore nature outdoors and visit natural history and geological museums. I also encouraged my family to take fossil collecting trips and drive down remote country roads to find archaeological sites. These were chances to observe nature and investigate the “outside world”. I grew up in London and also went to university there. I then had a two year research appointment in Scotland before working at a university in the United States for over 30 years. I then moved to Bulgaria and continue my interest in fossils and geology. I have always enjoyed opportunities to show others fascinating fossils. That’s what brings me here today!”
